Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how MN8 Technologies Inc. ("MN8," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and protects your personal information when you use the Ripn mobile application and related services (the "App"). We are committed to handling your information responsibly and in accordance with applicable privacy laws, including Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector (Law 25).
By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Policy. If you do not agree with this Policy, please do not use the App.
1. Who We Are
The App is operated by MN8 Technologies Inc. ("MN8"), located in Quebec, Canada. For any privacy-related questions or requests, you may contact us at team@ripn.app. MN8 is responsible for the personal information under its control.
2. Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information:
Information you provide
- Account information: your name and email address when you create an account, or the name and email associated with your Apple ID if you sign in with Apple. You may use the App without an account until you save your first receipt. If you join a household you may be asked for a display name, which is shown to the other members.
- Receipt photographs: images of grocery receipts that you choose to scan. The image is sent for processing and is also stored in your account so you can look at the receipt later. See section 3 for how these are handled.
- Grocery and spending data: the items read from your receipts, including the item name, the price you paid, the store, the purchase date, an estimated expiry date, and whether you later marked the item as used or thrown out. Taken together, this forms a record of your grocery spending.
Information collected automatically
- Purchase and subscription data: your subscription status and purchase history, processed through Apple and our subscription provider.
- Identifiers: a user identifier used to associate your data with your account, and, if you share a household, a push notification token for your device.
- Usage and diagnostic data: which screens you open and which actions you take in the App, such as scanning a receipt or marking an item as used, along with crash reports and basic performance data. This is used to understand how the App is used and to keep it stable.
We do not collect precise location data, contacts, health data, or browsing history. We do not sell your personal information and we do not use it for cross-app advertising or tracking.
Expiry reminders and check-ins are scheduled locally on your device and are not sent from our servers. If you share a household, we also collect a push notification token for your device so we can tell you when someone else in your household scans a receipt. You can turn that off in Settings under Notifications.
3. How Receipt Scanning Works
When you scan a receipt, the photograph is transmitted to Anthropic, an artificial intelligence provider, which reads the text and returns the line items and prices. This happens through a server we operate. Anthropic does not retain the image after processing it.
We store the photograph itself in a private area of our database, readable only by your account and, if you share a household, by the other members of it. It is kept so you can check a figure against the paper it came from. Deleting a receipt deletes its photograph, and deleting your account deletes all of them.
We also retain the text result of the reading, meaning the item names, prices, store and date, along with the raw structured response. This is kept so that a scan can be corrected or reprocessed later without asking you to photograph the receipt again. It is deleted when you delete your account.
Please avoid photographing receipts that contain information you do not want processed or stored, such as a full payment card number. Ripn does not need that information and does not ask for it.
4. Households
If you create or join a household, your receipts, the items on them, your spending, and your receipt photographs become visible to every other member of that household. Their data becomes visible to you in the same way. The person who scanned each receipt is shown next to it, along with the display name you provided.
Receipts stay with the household. If you leave a household or are removed from it, the receipts you scanned while a member remain visible to the remaining members, and you no longer have access to them. Anything you scan afterwards belongs to you alone. If you join a household, the receipts already in your account move into it.
Joining a household is always your choice. You can leave at any time in Settings under Household, and the household's owner can remove members at any time.
5. How We Use Your Information
We use your information only to operate and improve the App, specifically to:
- Create and manage your account and authenticate you;
- Read your receipts and add the items to your kitchen;
- Estimate how long items will keep and remind you before they expire;
- Calculate what you spent, what you used, and what you threw away;
- Share that data with the members of your household, if you have one;
- Manage your subscription and purchases;
- Provide customer support and respond to your requests;
- Send you emails about the App, including onboarding messages, product updates, and occasional offers. Every such email includes a link to unsubscribe, and unsubscribing does not affect your account or your ability to use the App;
- Understand how the App is used so we can improve it;
- Maintain the security, stability, and performance of the App; and
- Comply with our legal obligations.
6. Service Providers We Share Information With
We share limited information with trusted third-party service providers who process it on our behalf and under contractual obligations to protect it. These include:
- Supabase — database, authentication, and secure storage of your account, receipts, receipt photographs, and grocery data.
- Anthropic — reading the text and prices from receipt photographs you choose to scan, and identifying food items.
- RevenueCat — management of subscriptions and purchase status.
- Expo — delivery of push notifications to your device, if you share a household.
- Loops — delivery of the emails described above. Loops receives your email address and your subscription status, so that what we send is relevant to what you already have.
- PostHog — product analytics, used to understand how the App is used. Events are associated with your account identifier, never with your name or email.
- Google (Firebase Analytics) — measurement of app installs and subscriptions so we can understand which advertising works. Events are associated with your account identifier only.
- Apple — processing of App Store payments and, if you use Sign in with Apple, authentication.
Some of these providers may process or store information on servers located outside your province or country, including in the United States. Where information is transferred outside Quebec or Canada, it remains subject to this Policy and to appropriate contractual and legal protections. By using the App, you acknowledge that your information may be processed in such locations.
7. Legal Grounds and Consent
We collect and use your personal information based on your consent, which you provide by using the App, and as necessary to provide the services you request and to comply with legal obligations. You may withdraw your consent at any time by deleting your account, though this may prevent us from providing the App to you.
Where we send you commercial email, we do so on the basis of the relationship created when you open an account with us. You can end that at any time using the unsubscribe link in any message, without affecting your account or your use of the App.
8. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the App. When you delete your account, we delete your associated personal information, including your receipts, receipt photographs, and grocery data, from our active systems. Receipt photographs are also deleted when you delete the receipt they belong to. We may retain certain limited information where required to comply with legal, tax, or regulatory obligations, or to resolve disputes.
Data you contributed to a household while a member is retained by that household after you leave, as described in section 4, until the household or its owner deletes it.
9. Your Rights and Choices
Subject to applicable law, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you;
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
- Export your receipts and items as a spreadsheet, which you can do directly in the App under Settings, Your data;
- Delete your account and associated personal information, which you can do directly in the App under Settings, Delete account;
- Leave a household at any time, under Settings, Household;
- Unsubscribe from our emails at any time, using the link in any message we send or by writing to us;
- Withdraw consent to our processing of your information; and
- Lodge a complaint with a privacy regulator, including the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at team@ripn.app. We will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law.
10. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, use, or disclosure, including access controls that restrict each account's data to that account and, where applicable, its household. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Children's Privacy
The App is not intended for children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
